BAR BENDING AND STEEL FIXING











A bar bender & fixer should be able to identify types of bars, read drawings & prepare schedule, fabricate using hand and power tools, store, transport and fix reinforcement in position in formwork in readiness for concrete pears. Should strictly practice safety norms & precautions.


Specific Duties

  1. Read drawing & bending schedules.
  2. Identifies the types and grades of reinforcement available.
  3. Measures and sets out his work.
  4. Calculate from codes and standard the cut length, the weights of bars and weights involved in the total job.
  5. Computers the quantity of material used in day to day work.
  6. Estimate the time requirement of a particular job.
  7. Programmes and maintains progress of material & labour.
  8. Plan necessary workforce for the job.
  9. Plans cutting schedule so as to minimize scrap.
  10. Cut & bend reinforcement exactly as per requirement of the schedule.
  11. Ensure that bent bars of the same type are bundled together and tagged for identification.
  12. Ties and fastens bundled bars to ensure they remain in position whether horizontal or vertical
  13. Stacks & stores steel tidily and safely to ensure correct utilization based on size and type.
  14. Keep accurate and uniform spacing of bars, staggers laps and maintain correct cover.
  15. Recognizes main bars and distributors.
  16. Correlates the sequence of reinforcement placing with fixing of inserts, sleeves, conduits and anchor.
  17. Prefabricates mesh and cages including additional bars for lifting safely.
  18. Identifies and uses correct ties on structure.
  19. Works with mechanical connection systems used for extension of bars.
  20. Protects the steel from corrosion and weathering action.
  21. Prepare reinforcement patters for special structure.
  22. Understand the basic terms commonly used in building trade.
  23. Work safely at heights using ladders, scaffolds, and safety belts.
